Proton Therapy

Proton therapy is a type of radiotherapy that uses positively charged proton beams to treat a tumour. Unlike conventional X-ray radiotherapy, a proton beam can stop near a planned depth and may reduce radiation to surrounding healthy tissue. A radiation oncology team must assess whether it is appropriate for an individual case.

Side effects remain possible; benefits and risks depend on the individual case.

01

How it works

Proton therapy is a form of external beam radiotherapy. Protons carry a positive charge and release much of their energy near a planned depth, with the dose falling rapidly beyond it. The treatment team uses this property when shaping the radiation dose while protecting nearby healthy tissue.

02

Planning a course

Planning commonly involves a positioning scan and supports to keep the patient in a reproducible position. Radiation oncologists define the target and organs to protect, then develop an individual plan. The clinical team can compare proton and conventional photon plans before recommending a treatment.

03

Suitability and side effects

Proton therapy is not suitable for every patient and is not automatically better than other radiotherapy. Suitability depends on tumour type and location, earlier treatment and overall health. Fatigue, skin changes and other effects related to the treated area remain possible.

04

Preparing for an enquiry

Useful records may include pathology and imaging reports, previous treatment details and the current clinician's recommendation. Questions for a treatment centre include plan comparison, likely schedule, risks, costs and follow-up. Wellway China provides project information guidance; clinical decisions belong to the treating team.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is proton therapy?

Proton therapy is a form of radiotherapy that uses proton beams. The beam can deposit energy near a planned depth, which may reduce radiation exposure to some surrounding healthy tissue.

Is it suitable for every cancer?

No. Suitability depends on cancer type, location, previous treatment and individual circumstances. A qualified radiation oncology team must assess each case.

Does it have no side effects?

No. Proton therapy can still cause side effects. Risks depend on the treatment area and the planned course.

How can Wellway China help?

We organise project information and provide one-to-one information guidance to help you prepare questions for a medical institution. Clinical advice and treatment decisions belong to the treating team.
